“he intends to pursue a doubling of exports to China over the next 10 years, while simultaneously drawing the country into a military bloc deeply hostile to its key trading partner”
What a f###ing joke of a country. They’re finished if they let this munter follow through on his loud-mouthed bs. The entire economy will crater within a year.
Mr. Luxon's attitude to trade is confused. I expect that can be put down to the fact that he was the CEO of Air New Zealand, and has spent most of his working life in capitalist corporations where there is constant pressure to increase revenue and targets are set such as "doubling revenue over a ten year period". However there is not necessarily any reason for a country to set out to increase its external revenues (from trade). If goods can be more profitably consumed or produced in the domestic market then it makes no economic sense to trade them overseas. Therefore it makes no sense for entire nations to have targets for increase of foreign trade. Clearly Mr Luxon does not understand that obvious truth, and neither does he understand the simple reality of New Zealand's geopolitical position, as outlined by Helen Clark and Don Brash, a reality which also happens to make Mr. Luxon's "defence" policy totally incompatible with his trade policy. So New Zealand has a head of government who is not up to the job. A similar situation to that obtaining in the US at this time, and in the UK at least up to the time of the recent election. Perhaps it will be a comfort for Mr Luxon to know that he is "on the same page" as "like minded others" and "traditional allies" who "share the same values". That page being, of course, the one on which history has inscribed the names of the senile, demented, deluded and amoral defenders of a world order which is about to pass away, peacefully if we are lucky, or in a thermonuclear conflagration if we are not.
I was proud watching Helen Clark talk at the UN and I disagree with Luxon's path toward AUKUS. I am very opposed to following the USA and also being a part of the 5 eyes. China is a huge market for NZ
China is openly threatening countries like the Philippines, Taiwan, and Bhutan. There must be a coalition of countries that are willing to challenge the PRC’s expansionist aims in the region. If New Zealand truly cares about human rights, indigenous rights, and liberal democracy, then it must be part of that coalition.
