Bombing one of the most impoverished nations on Earth over its sea blockade to stop genocide in Gaza reflects Kiwi values, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says.
Incredibly disappointing to see the coalition government throw away years of neutral foreign policy to support the US attacks on Yemen and the Houthis, while ignoring the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Seems the world is done with diplomacy and true leadership. These days, you just brazenly do what you want and damn the consequences.
New Zealand has never had a neutral foreign policy. For the first century of its existence it was in lock step with Britain, and since then it has tugged the forelock to Canberra and Washington as well as Westminster. There was a brief period of a few decades when the idea of an independent foreign policy was floated in Wellington, on and off, but as Mick noted the Labour government of Jacinda Ardern was in the process of reversing that move towards independence even before the recent election of a centre-right coalition government. It is my belief that New Zealand will not and cannot have an independent foreign policy until it ceases to be a British colony with a British head of state and security forces which believe that they exist to advance the cause of the Anglo-American empire - not to defend the people of Aotearoa.
I get so very angry when I hear what Luxon, Peters, Collins et al vomit out. What parallel universe are they living in where ethics and morals are reversed. Those twisted shills for the US sicken me. What has happened to the Aotearoa. That used to stand up for the right things. What happened to our independent sovereignty. The last time a govt stood up to theUD was in 1984 with the nuclear ships ban. Since then the govts have collapsed into lap dogs for the US hegemon.
It's as sinister as it is odious. The creep towards US vassal status has been happening for a while, under Hipkins and Ardern with closer alignment with NATO. You can bet they'll sign up to Auckus Pillar II as well. It will be interesting to see if this coalition feels emboldened enough to revise NZ's anti-nuclear status.
Yes, I've been aware of the sprint towards vassal status for a while and it sickens me. I hope to become part of a movement fights against the anti-peace movement as well as the alignment with the supporters of fascism. Thanks for the great job you do.
